Pseudomonas aeruginosa has a versatile phenotype and high evolutionary potential which allow this opportunistic pathogen to adapt and proliferate in various natural habitats from open fields to the inside of hosts. For better understanding of the adaptation process of P. aeruginosa, the evolutionary dynamics in structured environments need to be elucidated because most natural habitats are spatially heterogeneous. We implemented a laboratory evolution experiment under static culture conditions and revealed the core evolutionary trajectories of P. aeruginosa PAO1 in a spatiotemporally heterogeneous environment by genomic and physiological analyses.
