Carica papaya is trioecious, whose sex controlled by a pair of young sex chromosome. It could be used to study the mechanism of unisexual flower formation in plants with sex chromosome. Papaya male and female flower are phenotypically the same before initiation of stamen or carpel primordia (stage 0), and then differentiate into two sex types. In this study, we compared the transcriptomic profiles of male and female floral buds at stage 0 to uncover genes and gene networks contributing to sex differentiation in papaya.
