This disclosure concerns methods for selecting plant cells comprising an exogenous polynucleotide and a fluorescent marker (for example， in a transgenic event)， and further concerns methods for producing regenerable plant cell cultures from such plant cells. In some embodiments， individual alginate-encapsulated plant cells comprising the polynucleotide and fluorescent marker are separated from other plant cells by fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS).
