Develop new technologies for sustainable agriculture. This is the objective of this project, which aims to characterize, through classic and advanced methods, the microbiome of different compartments of the sugarcane plant submitted to agricultural practices focused on biological nitrogen fixation (BNF). BNF's contribution to the sugarcane crop has already been demonstrated in several studies, implying a significant reduction in fertilizer costs and the environmental impact associated with its manufacture and use. However, there are still some gaps to be filled. The sugarcane production sector still lacks scientific data on the real effects of adopting more sustainable agricultural practices such as those involving BNF, and there is also a demand for a greater diversity of promising nitrogen fixing strains with applicability as inoculants. In this project, new groups of bacteria isolated from different compartments of the plant will be evaluated for their potential to promote plant growth and BNF. In addition, the benefits of crop rotation between sugarcane and legumes will be estimated. As a result, it is expected to determine changes in the sugarcane microbiome under agricultural practices that focus on BNF, as well as to develop a methodology for isolating metagenomic DNA from sugarcane apoplast fluid. In addition, the collection of diazotrophic bacteria cultures at the Johanna Dobereiner Biological Resources Center (CRB-JD) should be enriched, as well as advancing the knowledge of the effect of inoculation of new nitrogen-fixing bacteria.
