Following the first and second IDGE flight on USMP-2 and USMP-3, the third and final IDGE flight (USMP-4) was launched on STS-87, in November of 1997. The last flight employed pivalic acid (PVA)—a face centered cubic (FCC) organic plastic crystal that solidifies analogous to many non–ferrous metals unlike SCN that solidifies similar to BCC ferrous metal alloys. In comparison to SCN, PVA exhibits a large anisotropy of its solid–melt interfacial energy. The primary objective was to investigate if the anisotropy of solid-melt interfacial energy is indeed a key physical parameter in the subtle selection process of dendritic operating states.
