China Bamboo Industry Database (1978–Present)

The China Bamboo Industry Database is a provenance-rich collection documenting the long-term transformation of China’s bamboo sector. It brings together national forest-inventory observations, annual large-diameter bamboo output, provincial production snapshots, harmonized bamboo-specific trade records, international market-position indicators, destination-level trade flows, unit-value diagnostics, market-entry and exit decompositions, and national policy documents. The database covers the period from 1978 to the present, although the exact temporal coverage varies across modules. Rather than imposing artificial continuity across changing statistical and classification regimes, it preserves source identifiers, original units, HS revisions, estimation flags, conflicting observations, and comparability notes. The release also includes a source registry, variable dictionary, reproducible processing scripts, validation documentation, citation metadata, and file-integrity checksums. The database was developed to support reproducible research on bamboo, non-timber forest products, forest bioeconomy development, international trade, industrial upgrading, global value chains, and resource-to-capability conversion. Original documentation and derived data are released under CC BY 4.0, while original processing scripts are provided under the MIT License. These licences do not override the terms of the underlying third-party data providers.
