Ultrastructure of the human pineal gland: investigation in Alzheimer’s disease condition

Recent studies have shown that pineal gland (PG) dysfunction, due to PG volume reduction and PG calcification, is involved in the Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathogenesis. In this framework, we propose the investigation of the PG soft tissue and calcification from post-mortem human brains in norm and AD pathology on the cell level, using X-ray holographic nano-tomography for a comparative study. This research will allow us to evaluate the degree of involvement of the human pineal gland in the development of AD.
