Comfort and Entertainment Under Examination: The Effects of Campus Design on Student Social Interaction – Findings from Bahrain

This research examines the impact of spatial design elements on social interactions among students at Ahlia University in Bahrain. It emphasizes that well-designed environments can enhance social bonds by examining how natural and artificial physical features support relationships on campus. Using a mixed-methods approach—including on-site observations, student surveys, and space syntax analysis—the study pinpoints key factors affecting interpersonal attraction and interaction types, such as similarity, familiarity, and physical proximity. Results show that students predominantly gather in the cafeteria and common areas, but feelings of comfort and entertainment are notably low due to inadequate seating and recreational options. This highlights the crucial role of the physical environment in shaping student experiences and engagement. By focusing on thoughtful spatial design, the research illustrates how such environments can foster community and strengthen social bonds. To improve campus life, the study suggests incorporating user feedback into design, applying space syntax principles to optimize layout efficiency, and enhancing safety and comfort measures to promote student well-being. Addressing these aspects can help universities develop more inviting and functional spaces that encourage meaningful interactions and cultivate a strong sense of community among students.
