Distribution of medical scheme beneficiaries in South Africa 2021, by province

As of 2021, a total of approximately 8.94 million South Africans were registered as beneficiaries of a medical scheme across all provinces. The Gauteng province had the largest number of beneficiaries, with close to 3.44 million registered. The province of the Western Cape followed with around 1.39 million recipients.
