Air pollutant emissions in the Canton of Zurich

Emissions of the most important air pollutants (BC, CO, NH3, NMVOC, NOx, PM10, PM2.5, SO2) in the canton of Zurich. The emission accounting is available up to the municipal level and for different time periods. The emission data of nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) and soot (BC) were accounted for in hectare grid resolution as part of a Swiss-wide update of the maps for air pollutant immissions Switzerland and Liechtenstein 2015, 2020, 2030. The data basis for the emissions is the Emissions Information System Switzerland (EMIS) - the database of the Federal Office for the Environment FOEN with the national air pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions - at the time of mid-2019. In a supplementary study commissioned by the FOEN, emission registers in hectare grid resolution for further air pollutants and greenhouse gases were subsequently created for the same issuer groups. Following the above-mentioned work, the 'Air Quality Monitoring of the Cantons of Eastern Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein' (OSTLUFT) commissioned the INFRAS/Meteotest working group to aggregate the emissions of all the above-mentioned substances at the level of municipalities in the OSTLUFT area and to prepare the data in an appropriate form with the aim of providing the OSTLUFT communities with a data basis consistent with the Swiss emissions register. An update of the data was carried out with the same methodology but based on the data bases from the Swiss Emissions Information System (EMIS) at mid-2023.
