ELLIPSIS IN LINGUISTICS AND ITS ROLE IN COMMUNICATION

This article examines ellipsis in linguistics and its role in communication. Ellipsis is understood as the omission of syntactically required elements that can be recovered from context. The study explores the structural types of ellipsis, including nominal, verbal, clausal, and situational ellipsis, as well as theoretical classifications such as verb phrase ellipsis, gapping, sluicing, and stripping. It also analyzes the communicative functions of ellipsis, such as conciseness, coherence, emphasis, and stylistic effect. In addition, the article highlights cross-linguistic variation and identifies current research gaps, emphasizing the need for further investigation into syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic interactions. The findings demonstrate that ellipsis plays a significant role in making communication more efficient, natural, and context-dependent.
