Dynamic riverine floodplains offer an ideal setting to investigate spatial variation in the soil bacterial composition and to test which environmental factors are related to these patterns.We studied bacterial abundance and community structure of five soil cores using high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. Shifts in the soil bacterial composition were more pronounced within individual soil cores than across all cores, since the change in soil characteristics was more prominent within a vertical profile than across the landscape.
