The role of PSGLl-1 in the occurrence and development of periodontitis

This study discovered that a protein called PSGL-1, found in our immune cells, plays a surprising protective role in gum disease (periodontitis). While PSGL-1 levels increase in diseased gums—suggesting it’s part of the body’s defense—removing it in mice actually worsened bone loss and weakened immune cells’ ability to fight harmful mouth bacteria. Further experiments revealed that PSGL-1 helps immune cells ‘eat’ bacteria like P. gingivalis by working with two other proteins (PD-L1 and JAK2). When PSGL-1 is missing, this defense system breaks down, allowing bacteria to thrive. These findings could lead to new treatments that boost the body’s natural ability to protect gums by targeting this pathway.
