MUARC Insight Webinar | Micromobility Safety in Victoria

In this MUARC Insight webinar, held on Friday 28 August 2026, MUARC researchers and external guest speakers explore the growing use of micromobility in Victoria and the safety challenges associated with e-scooters and e-bikes. The webinar brings together researchers and practitioners to examine injury trends, contributing factors and opportunities to improve safety for people using these increasingly common modes of transport. Dr Jane Hayman and Associate Professor Janneke Berecki-Gisolf from MUARC's Victorian Injury Surveillance Unit discuss injury trends associated with e-scooters and e-bikes, drawing on injury surveillance data to examine the nature and extent of injuries among micromobility users. Their presentation provides insights into patterns of injury, the circumstances in which injuries occur, and the groups and behaviours that may be at greater risk. Dr Cameron Palmer from the Royal Children's Hospital examines the safety implications of micromobility use among children and young people. His presentation considers the types of injuries associated with e-scooter and e-bike use and highlights the importance of understanding the particular risks faced by younger riders as micromobility becomes more widely used. Daniel Vigilante from the Victorian Department of Transport and Planning provides a policy and practice perspective on micromobility safety in Victoria. His presentation considers the broader transport environment, the challenges associated with integrating e-scooters and e-bikes into the road and transport system, and opportunities and campaigns that are used to support safer micromobility use. Together, the speakers examine the evidence behind micromobility-related injuries in Victoria, discuss key factors contributing to crashes and injuries, and consider evidence-based recommendations and approaches to improve safety for e-scooter and e-bike users. The webinar is hosted by A/Prof Sjaan Koppel, with panel members Dr Jane Hayman and A/Prof Janneke Berecki-Gisolf, and guest speakers Dr Cameron Palmer from the Royal Children's Hospital and Daniel Vigilante from the Department of Transport and Planning, Victoria.
