Analysis of Carbon Sequestration and Carbon Dioxide Reduction by Post and Beam Wooden Construction Buildings in Taiwan

The objective of this study was to evaluate the CO2 emission and carbon sequestration under the post and beam (PNB) wooden construction buildings in Taiwan. A total of 53 PNB wooden construction buildings were selected for calculating the CO2 emission, which generated from construction materials’ energy consumption. The results indicated that the usage of wood materials in per unit construction area was 0.2090 m3/m2; the CO2 emission in per unit construction area were 47.47 kg/m2. By comparing the wooden construction to reinforced concrete (RC) and steel prefabricated (S) construction, the CO2 emission reduction of the wooden construction can reach 387.71 kg/m2 and 338.55 kg/m2, respectively. The results clearly proved the PNB wooden construction buildings have significances in CO2 reduction and carbon sequestration.
