Impacts of convection, chemistry, and forest clearing on biogenic volatile organic compounds over the Amazon

In-situ measurements of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) were conducted in the tropical troposphere over the Amazon rainforest using a PTR-TOF-MS instrument onboard the High Altitude and Long-range research aircraft (HALO). This study demonstrates the deep convective transport of BVOCs, including isoprene, its oxidation products, and monoterpenes, from the boundary layer to the upper troposphere. A sensitivity study of BVOCs is also performed using the EMAC model to understand the chemistry of the boundary layer and the upper troposphere over the Amazon rainforest.
