Smokestack Plume Images and Plume Identification Masks

This is a set of images of smokestack plumes recorded from Nov 2018 to Nov 2020 looking at the Syncrude facility in the Athabasca oil sands region of Alberta, Canada. The images were taken every 15 minutes from a camera mounted at the Wood Buffalo Environmental Association (WBEA) Buffalo Viewpoint station. The images centre on the main smokestack at the Syncrude facility and its plume. Images were collected with a Campbell Scientific CCFC field camera. A trained neural network has been developed and used to identify and segment the plumes in the images. This process is described in Koushafar et al., 2023 (Remote Sensing, https://doi.org/10.3390/rs15123083). Each image processed by the neural Network creates a binary output (mask) image which identifies the plume from the main stack based on this neural network algorithm. Accompanying text files give the variables required to calculate the plume rise for each image and indicate which photos are used in the analysis of Axelrod et al., 2025 (under review for the journal GMD).
