カナダの国民1人当たりの医薬品費支出額は、2022年時点でおよそ914米ドルとなっています。これに対し、米国の国民1人当たりの支出額は1,432米ドルであったと報告されています。医療品や医療サービス全般において、米国は世界で最も医療コストが高い国の一つです。特にほかの高所得国と比較した場合、米国の医療費の高さは歴然としています。 
高額な米国の薬剤価格 
一方医薬品費への支出増加は、米国人の医薬品使用量が増えたことが原因ではなく、米国における薬剤価格の大幅な上昇による影響が大きいとみられています。他国では、薬価は政府によってある程度規制されていますが、米国ではあくまでも市場競争に委ねられています。結果として、米国市場は医薬品企業にとって最も収益性の高い市場となっています。例えば、関節リウマチ治療薬ヒュミラ（一般名：アダリムマブ）の薬価は、米国では英国の2倍でした。 
米国における医療用医薬品の使用状況 
ある調査では、「前月に少なくとも1つの処方薬を服用したことがある」と答えた人は、米国人のほぼ半数という結果となっています。一般的に、女性の方が男性よりも処方薬を多く服用していますが、その差は過去20年間で大きく縮まっています。米国では、最も医薬品費の支出が多い薬効分類としては、抗糖尿病剤、抗腫瘍剤（抗ガン剤）、免疫抑制剤、呼吸器疾患用医薬品などが挙げられます。一方で、処方箋数でみると、血圧降下剤と精神神経用剤が上位を占めています。

On the other hand, the increase in pharmaceutical expenditures in the United States is attributed more significantly to the substantial rise in drug prices in the country, rather than an increase in the quantity of pharmaceutical use by Americans. While drug prices in other countries are to some extent regulated by the government, in the United States, they are largely left to market competition. Consequently, the US market has become the most profitable for pharmaceutical companies. For example, the drug price of Humira (generic name: adalimumab), a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, was twice as high in the United States as in the United Kingdom. In the United States, a survey revealed that nearly half of Americans reported having taken at least one prescription drug in the previous month. Generally, women tend to take more prescription drugs than men, but this gap has narrowed significantly over the past 20 years. Among the most expensive drugs in terms of expenditure in the United States are antidiabetic agents, antitumor agents (anti-cancer drugs), immunosuppressants, and respiratory drugs. On the other hand, antihypertensive agents and psychotropics occupy the top positions in terms of prescription counts.
