Assessing Urinary Neutrophil Gelatinase-Associated Lipocalin as a Prognostic Biomarker in Spontaneous Bacterial Peritonitis Among Decompensated Cirrhosis Patients

Urinary neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (uNGAL) was evaluated as a novel biomarker for spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) in patients with decompensated cirrhosis. This study demonstrated that uNGAL levels are significantly elevated in SBP cases and are strongly correlated with disease severity and prognosis. These findings highlight uNGAL’s potential of uNGAL for early diagnosis and as an independent prognostic factor, thereby offering a new tool for clinicians to improve patient outcomes. These insights could pave the way for more effective management strategies in cirrhotic patients at risk for SBP.
