ACS English Ability and Linguistic Isolation Boundaries
Overview This feature service provides American Community Survey-derived boundary layers for examining English ability and linguistic isolation across the United States. It brings together state, county, and tract polygons with detailed demographic measures focused on households and residents who speak English only, speak Spanish, or speak other languages, along with calculated indicators of limited English ability and bilingualism. Feature Layers State : State boundary polygons with census geography identifiers, land and water area, and a broad set of language-use and limited-English measures for residents age 5 and over. The layer includes calculated percentages that summarize linguistic isolation, adult English ability, and bilingual populations at the state level. County : County boundary polygons with state association, census identifiers, area information, and the same family of language-use measures. This layer supports county-level comparison of limited English households, English-only speakers, Spanish speakers, bilingual residents, and speakers of other language groups. Tract : Census tract boundary polygons with state and county context, area information, and tract-level language and English ability measures. This layer supports detailed neighborhood-scale analysis of linguistic isolation, bilingualism, and language-group composition. Geographic Coverage The service covers the United States at multiple administrative levels, including states, counties, and census tracts. The layers are suited to multiscale mapping and analysis of language access and household linguistic characteristics nationwide. Use Cases Mapping communities with limited English ability or linguistic isolation Comparing language-use patterns across states, counties, and tracts Supporting language access planning, outreach, and service delivery Analyzing bilingual populations and major language groups for demographic studies Creating thematic maps for American Community Survey language indicators Data Context The attribute content reflects American Community Survey language and English ability estimates, including margins of error and Esri-calculated summary indicators. The presence of state, county, and tract boundary layers makes the service useful for consistent cross-scale demographic visualization and analysis.
