Marie Holmes Tombstones

Marie Holmes was a young prostitute who killed herself on Pacific Avenue in Santa Cruz by swallowing carbolic acid. For a full story of her life and death, I recommend checking out the links below. At some point, Ms. Holmes' tombstone was removed from her grave. It was replaced in 1997 by the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History and E Clampus Vitus, who put a new marker and informational plaque (entitled "Lady of the Night") down at her gravesite. Her tombstone was found by a hiker in late 2012 near Davenport, approximately 12 miles north of Evergreen Cemetery. The original stone was restored to her grave in February 2013.
