Strategic framework for prioritisation to restore ecosystems at national and sub-national levels.

The EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2020 calls for the restoration of 15% of degraded ecosystems. As a preparatory action to achieve the objective, a strategic framework for the prioritisation of restoration projects has been developed. This also includes the identification of specific landscape areas for the implementation of measures. Maps of the biotope types and cultural landscape types of Austria, national inventories of certain ecosystems and the Austrian Forest Inventory serve as an essential basis for the assessment of the current state, the restoration potential and for the prioritization. The costs necessary to achieve the 15% target have been identified for forest, water and open-land ecosystems and total EUR 10.7 billion.
