A river contract is based on a strong mobilisation of local elected representatives, local residents and users in a coherent territory around a common project to rehabilitate and value their aquatic heritage. Collective objectives are defined. They are then translated into a management and development program that takes advantage of the ecological potential of the watercourse. Established by the circular of the Minister of the Environment of 5 February 1981, the river contract has gradually been enriched and adapted.
