Metatranscriptome evaluation of short-term nutrient pulses in a Microcystis-dominated harmful algal bloom.

Whole water samples were collected from surface water during a Microcystis-dominated bloom in Lake Erie, USA on July 24, 2019. A microcosm study was conducted by adding nitrate, ammonia, urea, or phosphate to sample bottles (plus no-addition controls) and incubated in situ for 48 hours. Filtered samples were collected for metatranscriptomic analysis. This study was performed to determine how nutrient pulses influence transcriptional responses in natural communities of Microcystis-dominated blooms.
