VPRS 9607 Index to Policy Decisions of the Commission

These books indexed policy decisions made at meetings of the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission from about 1936 until about 1977. It is not known whether the books indexed all policy decisions recorded in the minutes for the period. They did not index administrative or operational decisions. The decisions were recorded in VPRS 9480 Minute Books.Generally each policy index book was divided alphabetically. Within each alphabetical section, subjects were listed, giving the date of the Commissions resolution and, in some cases, the relevant correspondence number in VPRS 6008 General Correspondence Files.The first of the volumes (1936 to 1938) appears to have been created by an individual officer as an informal index to decisions which affected his own work area. It has few entries. The later volumes, covering the period 1938 to 1977, appear to be formal indexes, though it is not known which branch(es) of the Commission created them. Whether policy decisions were indexed after 1977 is not known.These books did not index every resolution of the Commission. However, they represent a convenient place to start looking for a policy decision recorded in the Commissions minutes. If a subject cannot be found in the policy books, then the agencys correspondence files and their associated registers and indexes will have to be used. It appears to be an informal aid prepared by one officer for the convenience of his own work area. The others are formal indexes, possibly created by either the secretariat or the records branch. All the volumes have been gathered together by the Public Record Office for the convenience of researchers.
