Dresden looks back on a centuries-old market tradition. It is proven that the oldest Christmas market in Germany takes place on the Dresden Altmarkt: Since 1434 and thus for more than half a millennium. On the old and the new market as well as on other squares, "market" was held regularly with all kinds of fresh produce. This tradition was not interrupted until the end of the 19th century after the construction of three large market halls. On behalf of the city, ten weekly markets are organized today. Other markets of all kinds, including large flea markets, are operated privately.
