The red pigment-producing bacterium Serratia marcescens KEGS1 was isolated from soil samples collected from a rubber estate in the Kegalle district of Sri Lanka. A pigment-impaired mutants of KEGS1_40 and non-pigmented mutants KEGS1_01 was generated by mutating KEGS1.
