Flooding areas are areas that flood in the event of floods, flow through or are claimed for flood retention. This includes, in particular, areas between above-ground waters and dikes or high banks. The basis for calculation is a nationwide flooding event, as can be expected statistically once in 100 years. The designation of flood zones is one of the strategic precautionary measures in flood protection with immediate planning implications, such as restrictions on the designation or extension of municipal construction areas.
