The two haplotypes of the Manihot esculenta cultivar African isolate TME204 genome Plant mitochondrial genomes are known to be highly fragmented, with total lengths varied from 200 to 2,000 kbp. Instead of being one large circular DNA molecule, a plant mitochondrial genome often exists as a collection of linear, circular, and branched DNA molecules. The 53 mitochondrial haplotigs in the principal assembly added up to a total size of 2 Mbp, which can represent a complete mitochondrial genome. The 281 mitochondrial haplotigs (with a total length of 12 Mbp) in the alternate assembly can represent different sequence variants of the mitochondrial genome. This result is a strong support for the recent discovery of plant mitochondrial DNA as a complex and dynamic mixture of sequence variants. We are actively analyzing these sequences.
