Decrease in overnight stays of international tourists due to COVID-19 in Finland 2020

As a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, the overnight stays of international tourists in Finland dropped by 68 percent during the year 2020. The overnight stays of Swedes decreased most, by almost 82 percent compared to the corresponding period in the previous year. Furthermore, the overnight stays of tourists from China declined by 80 percent compared to 2019, followed Japan with a decrease of 77 percent. On March 19, 2020, Finland began to restrict cross-border traffic and closed its borders for unnecessary travel. Overall, visitor arrivals from all of the most important countries of inbound tourism declined dramatically from March 2020 onwards.
