Chlamydia in wild Indian ring-necked parakeets

Indian ring-necked parakeets (Psittacula krameri manillensis), introduced to Japan as exotic species, have established in urban areas of Tokyo in flocks of more than 1,000 birds. Exotic animals released to the wild and establishing new populations cause several problems regarding conservation and disease prevention. Psittacines are known to carry Chlamydiaceae which might pose a risk to humans especially in areas with bird-human direct or indirect contact such as parks and gardens. Therefore, we determine the genome of Chlamydia detected in wild Indian ring-necked parakeets.
