VPRS 19326 Drilling Unit Weekly Reports

This series comprises weekly summary reports of drilling activities relating to boreholes submitted by drilling units to the Mines Department (VA 612) and subsequent government department during 1969, and 1978 – 1993. Information recorded includes the drill number and location, and a summary of activities and any findings. Some reports may also record a ‘peg no.’ (job number). Boreholes (otherwise known as drill or well holes) are narrow shafts drilled into the ground for various purposes, including geotechnical investigation, mineral exploration, environmental assessment, temperature measurement, or the extraction of water, petroleum, or gases. The data collected assist in identifying geological strata and provide valuable information on the chemistry of fluids trapped in rocks and are an essential tool for groundwater, oil and gas exploration, as well as carbon capture and storage. The data is irreplaceable, as once a well has been drilled and capped, it becomes impossible to repeat the logging.
