VPRS 14920 Register of Position Files II

In some years the Forests Commission began updating files on certain subjects. The old files were closed and part or all of their contents were transferred to new files if necessary. A specific range of file numbers was used to register the new files so that they would remain together. In this way separate collections of files were created.Although this file numbering procedure enabled Forests Commission Victoria to keep most of the files on a specific subject together, some related files remained in the general system, particularly earlier files that had been closed years before a special sequence was considered.This series of cards is a Register of Position Files. It is a subsequent record series to VPRS 14922 Register of Position Files I, beginning with file number 58/4000.During 1975 the Victorian Public Service Board introduced its own numerical code to identify positions throughout the public service. Forests Commission Victoria position numbers began with the prefix 78/05 and positions were then numbered sequentially, eg. 78/05/0001, 78/05/0002. Existing position files were renumbered from 0001 onwards to correspond with the numbers quoted in the Victorian Public Service Notices and each new position received the next available number.The cards recorded registration information on one side of the card and file movements on the other.After amalgamation in 1983, position files that remained in use were gradually top-numbered with new codes denoting the Department of Conservation, Forests and Lands and subsequent departments.
