The development of anaerobic microbial communities in small plug-flow, fixed-film reactors was followed by chemical reactor performance and sequencing of variable V4 region of 16s rDNA. Replicate reactors were inoculated from two different sources: a large, lab-scale plug-flow, fixed-film anaerobic reactor and an acidic transitional fen. Uninoculated reactors were included as controls. Reactor performance was followed over a period of 299 days. At the end of the operating period, the microbial communities in the small reactors were sequenced.
