The scientific community is becoming increasingly interested in the impact of plant polyphenols on animal nutrition. These chemicals are found throughout the plant world, particularly in certain spontaneous plants used as alternate nutrition sources to cultivated crops and in a variety of agro-industry by-products. Polyphenols regulate rumen environment and metabolism via interacting with the rumen microbiome. Some of these features, particularly tannins, have been extensively examined; however, there is less evidence on the direct influence of polyphenols on the makeup of the rumen microbiota. Taking into account current breakthroughs in microbiota, we evaluate the most recent research on the influence of plant polyphenols on the rumen microbiota responsible for unsaturated fatty acid biohydrogenation, fibre digestion, and methane generation.
