Geochemical and microbial dynamics of metastable iron sulfides

Coastal areas of the northern Baltic Sea are characterized by the presence of sulfide-rich sediments that if exposed to air, can release toxic metals containing acidic solutions to recipient water bodies. Therefore, it is critical to understand the oxidation of these sediments to develop efficient remediation methods. This study focused on the biogeochemical dynamics of an uncontaminated sediment with an approximately equal share of pyrite and metastable iron sulfides during a 30-month laboratory incubation.
