Free living soil bacterium with biocontrol potential, isolated in 1983 from the roots of tobacco in a soil suppressive to Thielaviopsis basicola (black root rot of tobacco) in Morens, Switzerland. Strain CHA0 is used as a model biocontrol organism by many research groups world-wide. See Stutz & Defago 1986, Phytopathology 76:181-185 for a first description of the strain.
