Global Tree Cover on Agricultural Land - 2000-2020

This dataset provides annual estimates of percent tree cover across global agricultural land for five benchmark years: 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2020. It forms the primary geospatial data product underlying the analysis published in:Zomer, R.J., Nasi, R., Xu, J., van Noordwijk, M., and Trabucco, A. (2026). Two decades of tree cover gains transform global agricultural landscapes. Nature Sustainability (submitted March 2026).The dataset documents a sustained increase in tree cover across approximately 22.17 million km² of cultivated and cropland-mosaic agricultural land — from a global mean of 15.5% in 2000 to 17.3% in 2020 — corresponding to an estimated ~4.7 Pg gain in global biomass carbon.
