Cultural Resources Survey of the Barker Field-Mitchelville Road-Washington/Works Property

On 13–16 February 2007, Brockington and Associates, Inc., conducted an intensive cultural resources survey of the 19-acre Barker Field–Mitchelville Road–Washington/Works Property on Hilton Head Island in Beaufort County, South Carolina. These investigations were completed for Barker Field, LLC, of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. We investigated this tract for the presence of historic properties (sites, buildings, objects, or districts listed on or eligible for the
National Register of Historic Places). This survey was requested in compliance with state laws and federal regulations concerning the management of historic properties affected by development activities in the Coastal Zone of South Carolina.

The cultural resources survey included a review of land ownership and use recorded in public documents, a review of previous investigations near the tract, and the excavation of shovel tests at 7.5- and 15-meter intervals across the tract. Two abandoned and heavily damaged and decayed concrete-block houses are present in the central portion of the tract.

We identified two archaeological sites (38BU2249 and 38BU2250) and one isolated find (Isolate 1) during the cultural resources survey of the Barker Field–Mitchelville Road– Washington/Works Property. We recommend sites 38BU2249 and 38BU2250 and Isolate 1 not eligible for the NRHP. No further management of these cultural resources is recommended. Further management of the Barker Field-Mitchelville Road–Washington/Works Property with regard to cultural resources is not warranted.
