Zoonotic transmission of ESBL resistance genes from non-intensive poultry farms in Vietnam

The overuse of antimicrobials in food-animal farming is an important factor contributing to the emergence and dissemination of antimicrobial-resistant organisms in animal production systems, and contributes at an unknown level to the overall problem of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in human medicine. To describe the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance among commensal Escherichia coli isolates on household and small-scale chicken farms, common in southern Vietnam, Escherichia coli were isolated from farms and tested for antimicrobial susceptibility. The genomes of 122 ESBL positive E. coli isolates were sequenced.
