DOCTORATE DISSERTATION: Weasels are probably the most widespread and common carnivores that prey extensively on voles and lemmings....... In April 1966 at Sagehen Creek in the Sierra Nevada, California, I found that 15 per cent of the winter nests of montane voles (Microtus montanus) exposed as the snow melted had been occupied by weasels. The investigation reported here grew out of this observation.
