Prehistory in the Lower Pecos: An Overview

This is an overview of prehistory in the lower Pecos. The pictographs for which the area is most noted testify to a complex ideological or mythological world far more varied than indicated by the economic and technological remains. Furthermore, by adapting to their environment, learning to utilize rather than drastically alter the natural resources, the native peoples were able to endure over 10,000 years. Only 400 years have passed since the first European set foot in the Lower Pecos and only time will tell how long our culture will survive.
