Empathy-Based Economy and the Emergence of a Compassionate Local Network : Toward a Post-Monetary Society Rooted in Kindness and Relational Ethics

In the face of accelerating ecological degradation, systemic inequality, and the erosion of social cohesion, this paper proposes an alternative economic framework: the Empathy-Based Economy. This paradigm challenges the dominance of monetary value by positioning empathy and kindness as the core metrics of social exchange. Drawing upon interdisciplinary insights from philosophy, Buddhist ethics, neuroscience, and information technology, the study introduces the concept of a Compassion Token, a non-monetary unit of value that digitally records acts of kindness. The proposed model envisions a transition through hybrid stages—from monetary systems to post-monetary communities—facilitated by wearable technologies, AI-driven trust evaluation, and decentralized governance. Rather than advocating for a sudden overthrow of capitalism, this framework outlines a soft, gradual dissolution of monetary logic through the cultivation of empathy-centered local networks. It also addresses potential challenges, including ethical ambiguity, cultural variability in empathic expression, and the risks of misuse. Ultimately, the paper imagines a society where mutual care replaces competition, and where value is not extracted but generated through relationships. This vision is both a critique of existing systems and a proposal for an evolutionary shift in human economic behavior.
