International competition is increasingly causing sales problems for domestic manufacturers of pumps and compressors. Since 2019, the industry has been developing negatively with an average decline in sales of 2.1% per year. To be able to compete internationally, German companies are increasingly investing in the research and development of new technologies. These include digital components for various pump systems. With their help, it is possible to precisely control and monitor the systems. In 2020, there was a pandemic-related slump in sales, as demand for motor vehicles and industrial plants, which require pumps and compressors, fell significantly. This was followed by a moderate recovery in 2021, which resulted from the renewed increase in demand for automobiles and other consumer goods. For 2024, IBISWorld expects a decline in turnover of 1.9% compared to the previous year to 12.9 billion euros. One of the industry's main customers is the automotive industry. It uses pumps and associated systems for fuel transport and engine cooling. The industry also benefits from the strong position of mechanical engineering in Germany. This enables manufacturers to assert themselves better internationally, as their products are associated with the keywords precision, quality and technology. For 2024, sales to automotive manufacturers are expected to be weak and the production volume will only change negatively compared to the previous year.In the next five years, the industry is likely to continue to grow only slightly. The industry's total turnover is expected to increase by an average of 0.5% per year to €13.2 billion by 2029. In particular, the difficult situation on the global market, which is characterised by global supply chain problems, is likely to cause problems for industry players. On the other hand, the industry should benefit from the fact that many German customers are increasingly shortening their supply chains and sourcing more pumps and compressors from German suppliers.
