Surface ocean velocities obtained by High Frequency Radar (HFR) in Straits of Florida Codar SeaSonde raw data from 2019-12-16 to 2022-06-21

This dataset contains unprocessed and processed high frequency radar (HFR) data from the MARA Codar SeaSonde site. This site was located on Marathon, Florida, and was positioned facing south over the Loop Current in the Straits of Florida region of the Gulf of Mexico. HFR were used to record observed Doppler spectrum of sea surface wave echoes which contain current and wave information that can be processed into usable data. The data began on 2019-12-16 and ended on 2022-06-21 (there are a few files from October and November 2019, but spectra or radials were calculated). The real-time data for this site was used for oceanographic model data assimilation and validation, which helps better understand the evolution of the Loop Current System. This site was owned and operated by the University of South Florida as part of the Understanding Gulf Ocean Systems (UGOS) project funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF).
