Beck et al. (2023) Köppen-Geiger Global 1-km Climate Classification Maps

The Beck et al. (2023) Köppen-Geiger Global 1-km Climate Classification Maps (Version 2) cover global land surfaces with spatial resolution of 0.01 degrees (~1 km). Additional maps are available for coarser spatial resolutions of 0.1 degrees, 0.5 degrees, and 1 degree. Maps cover six approximately 30-year time periods, including four historic periods (1901-1930, 1931-1960, 1961-1990, and 1991-2020) and two future time periods (2041-2070 and 2071-2099). The historic climate classifications are derived from multiple observation-based datasets of air temperature and precipitation. The future projected climate classifications are based on downscaled and bias-corrected air temperature and precipitation projections from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) for seven different socioeconomic scenarios (Shared Socioeconomic Pathway (SSPs)). Köppen-Geiger climate classifications include five major classes (tropical, arid, temperate, cold, and polar) and 30 sub-classes. The Köppen-Geiger climate classifications can be used for assessing environmental change, ecological modeling, and other applications that require information on variation in climate classification at local to global scales.
