Virtual water embedded in Gulf Cooperation Council crop-product food imports, 2000-2024: derived data and computation scripts

Derived data and computation scripts underlying every figure and table in the manuscript "Virtual water embedded in Gulf Cooperation Council crop-product food imports, 2000-2024", submitted to Food Security (Springer) on 28 September 2026. The study estimates the green and blue virtual water embedded in a matched subset of crop-product food imports to the six GCC states, combining FAOSTAT trade data with the crop water-footprint coefficients of Mekonnen and Hoekstra (2010, 2011). It reports a bilateral exporter-specific sensitivity analysis, an LMDI decomposition of the increase into volume, commodity-mix and exporter-shift effects with 1-, 3- and 5-year window sensitivity, exposure of imported blue virtual water to exporters under SDG 6.4.2 water stress, and a descriptive net water ledger for Saudi Arabia. Contents: scripts/ (11 Python scripts, from coefficient parsing to figures), data/ (derived series, robustness tables, ledger outputs and a codebook), README.md and LICENSE. Only derived outputs are redistributed; the FAOSTAT, Mekonnen-Hoekstra and World Bank source datasets are not included and are identified in the README so they can be obtained from their own providers. Coverage is a documented partial lower bound: 85 of 503 candidate FAOSTAT crop-trade items were matched, covering an estimated 29.2% of candidate tonnage, and animal products are excluded. Four further caveats are set out in the README.
