DMO Coal Seam Elevation Points

This dataset contains horizontal point locations with coal seams elevation attributes. The data was digitized from georeferenced maps of underground coal mines in Pennsylvania. Coal mining has occurred in Pennsylvania for over a century. This dataset contains horizontal point locations with coal seams elevation attributes. This information can be used for many environmental related issues, including mine land reclamation and mine pool analysis. The information in this dataset was gathered from digitizing surveyed points with elevation data identified on historic and modern underground mine maps. The maps to these coal mines are stored at many various public and private locations (if they still exist at all) throughout the commonwealth, they have been scanned to create a digital archive, and georeferenced to their approximate location for use in a geographic information system (GIS). The maps are known to use various vertical datums and values captured are as they are shown on each map, therefore adjacent points may have values in slightly different datums, but most represent average US feet above sea level.
