This review systematically discusses the element, phase, and melt pool structure of nickel-based superalloys, while discusses the influence of various fabrication methods during LAM. Above these, defects were classified into alloy-related defects and fabrication-related defects, and the origins, mechanisms, and elimination methods were analyzed. Subsequently, we proposed three alloy tailoring methods:γ/γ′/γ′′ tailoring, microalloying elements addition, and second phase particles addition. The impact of fabrication and alloy tailoring on the mechanical properties of nickel-based superalloys was comprehensively evaluated. This review provides guidance for the preparation of LAM nickel-based superalloys and offers some suggestions for alloy tailoring to suppress defects and improve properties.
