The FSSP microphysics dataset contains in situ measurements collected during CADDIWA field campaign along the SAFIRE F20 flight track with a Forward Scaterring Spectrometer Probe (FSSP, SPP-300 version).
The probe was installed on a pod underneath the F20 port wing (outer position). It is a particle spectrometer that counts, sizes and sorts particles (either large aerosol particles or small droplets) in the 0.3-20 micrometer range into 30 size classes with a resolution of 0.5 to 1 µm (variable across the measurement range). The raw data (counts per second) is processed using DMT built-in sizing & counting algorithms. The optical size is derived by the insturment using a Mie scattering model based on a refractive index of 1.44 in size classes below 2 µm and 1.33 (water) above. The optical size derivation does not include correction for non sphericity and refractive index. The probe sample volume is calculated using the true airspeed (from F20 Core measurement dataset) and the sample area indicated by the manufacturer.
Data acquisition was synchronized with the F20 GPS clock and the data is geolocalized using aircraft position. The dataset contains one file per flight, 9 files in total.
